His personality is of an almost unspeakable gentleness. His language consists mainly of purring, chirping and buzzing. He likes to sit on your lap and loves to be caressed, he enjoys brushing and combing. His curly coat is more easy to be done than one would suppose. Even long haired Selkirk Rex are to be combed only once or twice a week. Light coloured long haired Rex cats are recommended a bath some days before they go to show. Allow some days for regeneration of hair.

Immediately at birth Selkirk Rex babies are curly all around. They look like little teddy bears. During the first weeks of life curls may straighten more or less. Then hairs can be just decently frizzled for some weeks to months until beginning on neck, ruff and breeches fur will curl up again. Full development of a dense soft rex coat may take up to two years. |

Selkirk Rex cats come along in short hair and in long hair. In respect of the small Selkirk Rex gene pool (the breed was decovered in 1987) outcrosses to convenient breeds (e. g. British Shorthair) are allowed. This is why there are straight haired kittens in Rex litters. Basically they are British type and as charming as their curly siblings. |
